The Challenge
The challenge was to design and install a new machine capable of meeting the Client’s key requirements: reducing the pollutant emissions generated by the existing turbo‑compressor, relying on carbon‑free energy, and providing a scalable solution able to operate efficiently at low flow rates—something the current turbo‑compressors cannot achieve during the Site’s forthcoming transition from Gaz B to Gaz H in northern France. At the same time, the solution had to minimise on‑site modifications by allowing the new compressor to be installed in place of one of the three existing turbo‑compressorss.
The Solution
The solution consisted in designing and installing a new electro‑compressor to replace one of the three existing turbo‑compressors. Tractebel provided full EPCM services throughout the project lifecycle, covering engineering activities—including HSE considerations across feasibility, basic and detailed design—along with comprehensive support to the Client during the award of supply and works contracts. The team also performed rigorous reviews of contractors’ and vendors’ execution engineering, ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety requirements. Finally, Tractebel managed, coordinated and planned all construction, commissioning and start‑up activities on Site, maintaining a strong focus on HSE performance and seamless integration of the new equipment within existing facilities.
The Impact
The electro compressor was commissioned in July 2025. With over 120,000 hours worked on site without a single accident, the project stands as a benchmark for safe, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure upgrades in the energy sector.
